Description paper on the central elements of Vedic religion
The instructions to the project were as follows:
Write a 2 page paper where you describe the central elements of Vedic religion (i.e. the religion of the Vedic period, prior to and excluding the Upanishads). In what crucial ways does Vedic religion differ from the religion that emerges with the Upanishads and the Gita and in what ways are some of the later developments (particularly beginning with the Gita) latent in or continuous with Vedic religion?
The first page of the paper is as follows:
The Vedic religion is essentially a precursor to the later development of Hinduism in India. The central theme of the religion is one of sacrifice where ritual sacrifices administered by the clergy are considered to be a tenant of the faith. Beyond the idea of sacrifice, there are also other concepts important to the Vedic faith such as the worship of rivers and elements in nature such as fire and water. There were also gods in the religion to which hymns were chanted and sacrifices were made to depending on what a person wanted to pray for. For example, more children, better rains, greater wealth and a long healthy life for the person engaging in the sacrifice (Michaels and Harshav, 2003).
Being a polytheistic religion, there were several divine characters and gods included in worship to which sacrificial rituals had to be made. Michaels and Harshav (2003, Pg. 34) note that, “Sacrifice took place in the open on in simple sacrifice huts with changing sacrifice altars” Over time, the ceremonies of the religion and the process of the sacrifice became quite complicated and other concepts also came into the fold of the faith. For example, things such as reincarnation, karma and mukti (release) from the cycle of birth and rebirth. These developments led towards the eventual creation of Hinduism in the form it is seen today.
